What is a Salicylic acid peel?
Salicylic acid peels are a type of beta hydroxy (BHA) peel. The name “salicylic acid” might sound familiar because salicylic acid is very common ingredient in acne type product. It is also great for clogged pores and acne.

How does a Salicylic acid Peel benefit me?
Salicylic acid peels can help improve the following skin conditions:
– Clogged pores
– Oily, congested skin
– Acne
– Blackheads

How does a Salicylic acid Peel work for me?
A salicylic acid peel is a superficial peel that gently exfoliates the layers of cells that are covering the clogged pores and is causing whiteheads it also penetrates into the oil glands to release the oil. Improvement in the appearance of the acne and the blackheads is usually obtained after a series of treatments.

What can I expect during the treatment?
The treated area is cleansed, and the peel solution is applied. The solution is left on for five to ten minutes or as long as prescribed. During the salicylic acid peel, your skin will feel warm and prickly. It will probably also turn red. And because salicylic acid is more penetrating, you may feel more topical discomfort than other chemical peels If you experience pain that you cannot tolerate at all, the peel needs to be immediately removed. As the product dries a frosting, white crystals will be visible on the skin especially around acne areas. It is neutralized and followed by a custom designed post peel protocol. Your skin will be red and sensitive after the peel. This facial redness, or erythema, post-peel should subside in a few hours. For some people, the redness can linger around for a couple of days later. Salicylic acid peels can cause your skin to turn dry and flaky. Your skin probably won’t peel off in sheets, but some light peeling might take place.
You will notice a visible difference in the appearance of the acne if present, oiliness and pores of your skin, even after the first treatment. We will recommend an at-home regiment to maintain your new appearance. We offer several different strengths of salicylic acid solutions. The higher the Level the higher the concentration, the deeper the solution will penetrate into the skin and can cause more damage to tissue.

Am I a candidate for a Salicylic acid Peel?
Salicylic acid peels are usually best for those with acne-prone skin. If you are trying to fade hyper-pigmentation, lactic acid or glycolic acid will probably be better. Salicylic acid peels will probably not be as effective for anti-aging either.

How much downtime should I expect?
There isn’t any significant downtime associated with salicylic acid peels. For most people, skin heals and returns back to normal in 3-4 days. The main side effects from salicylic acid peels are facial redness and flaking skin. However, these side effects are usually not severe enough to take time off work or clear out your schedule. If you use Salicylic acid peels for active acne, you might experience some post-peel eruptions. As the acid exfoliates away the surface of your skin, it brings clogs you have underneath closer to the top, which may erupt as more active pimples. As with all exfoliating treatments, salicylic acid peels will make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Therefore, it is very important to stay indoors and wear a good SPF30 when you go outside, especially the first two days after you get the peel.

Are there any contra-indications for a Salicylic acid Peel?
People with an aspirin allergy, however, must avoid getting this type of peel. If you have a skin disorder such as psoriasis or rosacea, you would not be a candidate for this peel. Women who are breast feeding or pregnant are also not advised to have a salicylic acid peel.

This peel is available in two strengths:
Salicylic acid Peel – LEVEL 1 (Salicylic acid 10 %)
Salicylic acid Peel – LEVEL 2 (Salicylic acid 20 %)

Contents:
1 X Salicylic acid Peel in a glass bottle with a roller ball applicator, 2 X Alcohol swabs
1 x 30 ml Skin Scripts Skin Protect (SPF30)

Perform a spot test prior to your chemical peel:
A patch test tells you how your skin will respond to the peel. The test should be performed on your forearm, or on a small area of skin below the ear at the hairline. Leave the test solution on for at least 1 minute before washing it off with water.
Check the test patch after 24 hours. If skin looks normal around the test area, proceed with your peel treatment. If irritation like redness or tenderness appeared, lower the concentration of chemicals in the peel solution and try another test. If you had signs of an allergic reaction, such as raised bumps or itching, try a lower concentration or a different type of active ingredients (glycolic or trichloroacetic acid) in your peel solution.

Clean your face before applying the chemical peel:
Use water and a cleanser prior to your peel. Finish with an application of the alcohol swab that came with your chemical peel kit.

Apply an even coat of the chemical peel solution to the skin:
Use small circular movements to roll on the peel, beginning with the less sensitive areas of skin around the forehead, chin and cheeks. Continue to apply the chemical peel below the eyes, nose and upper lip area. Make sure the solution is applied evenly, or your chemical peel results will be inconsistent. Close the peel immediately after application to prevent the peel from loosing it’s activity.

Leave the peel on your skin for the recommended amount of time:
Start with the Level 1 peel and leave on for 10 (ten) minutes. Watch your skin for signs of irritation. While some burning is normal, if your skin begins to frost or sting intensely, remove the peel solution right away. Subsequent peel can be left on for 1 minute longer until you have reached the 15 minute maximum time. Do not exceed 15 minutes for each peel. If you want to increase the intensity of the peel you can start using the next strength or Level 2 peel. The Level 2 Peel must also start with a 10 (ten) minute application time and increase in subsequent peel to a maximum of 15 minutes for each peel.

Remove the peel and apply Skin Protect (SPF30):
Your peel is designed to stop working as soon as it is washed off with a mild soap, and an additional neutralizer solution is not needed. Apply Skin Protect (SPF30) supplied in your kit. This will calm the skin and also prevent sun damage if you have to go into the sun.
When will you see results?
You will need approximately 4-6 peels for optimum results. The number of peels you have to get before your skin starts to improve will also depend on the severity of the skin issue you are trying to fix. For blackheads, you will probably see results after 2-3 peels. For mild-moderate acne, it will probably take around 6 peels, more if your acne is more severe. Salicylic acid peels are great for clearing out mild skin bumps, but if your acne is inflamed and/or moderate-severe, there are no guarantees that getting a series of peel treatments alone will clear your skin; you may need other products to help between peels. Salicylic acid peels can be done once every 2 weeks. However, some people can tolerate getting them every 7-10 days.
